Our Students

Our Students

Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School is recognized as a leader in teaching children with learning difficulties that include the acquisition, organization, retention, understanding and use of verbal and nonverbal information. These learning difficulties often affect children who otherwise demonstrate average or above-average abilities essential for thinking and reasoning.

To find out if your child would be a good fit for KGMS learn more here.

Inside the Classroom

Inside the Classroom

KGMS develops the whole child. This endeavour is complex, requiring many people, programs and services to address each child’s unique needs. Most of our classes have a maximum of 18 students. Instruction and daily activities are conducted, for the most part, in small group settings with an approximate teacher to student ratio of 5:1.

Through a combination of technology, activities, oral and written work, our teachers actively find ways for each student to succeed. They build upon these successes to make learning attainable, stimulating and rewarding. Our students thrive in this kind of supportive environment.

Learning Environment

Learning Environment

Ministry of Education prescribed curriculum is addressed in all instructional areas from grades 1 – 12. Materials are adapted and accommodations are made to meet each child’s individual needs. Every student receives daily, individualized one-on-one tutoring. Most students have the same tutor for their entire time at KGMS. This relationship nurtures the child’s growth, building a foundation for educational success.

All of our tutors are trained and certified in the world-renowned Orton-Gillingham Method. This multi-sensory method engages learners visually, auditorily and kinesthetically. The learning sequence is systematic and takes the student step-by-step from basic concepts that progress to more complex languages functions.

Dynamic Environment

Dynamic Environment

At KGMS, we teach the way your child learns. We believe that every child is unique, and rather than requiring him or her to fit within a rigid, pre-determined program we create a learning environment that’s adaptive, producing the best possible circumstances for success.

Our students work in a dynamic classroom setting that includes whole class, small group and one-on-one tutoring. Instruction and activities are conducted with a student-teacher ratio of 5:1. Ministry of Education prescribed curriculum is addressed in all instructional areas from grades 1 – 7.

Educational Excellence

Educational Excellence

With over 40 years of experience, KGMS has a long tradition of educational excellence. We use the world-renowned Orton-Gillingham Method which teaches students visually, auditorily and kinesthetically, allowing them to engage in their learning and retain skills and concepts that would have previously been forgotten.

Children receive daily individualized one-on-one tutoring. Depending upon their needs, the tutoring sessions may develop reading using the Orton-Gillingham method, mathematics using critical thinking and problem-solving strategies or social emotional skills through direct instruction and supervised play.

Empowering through Learning

Empowering through Learning

Every student receives an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) which is developed by the classroom teacher with input from the student’s tutor, and in collaboration with the parents. The IEP customizes instructional strategies and resources to address the child’s strengths and needs.

Our program empowers students and restores confidence in their abilities. We prove to our students that they are intelligent and they are entitled to learn joyously, to succeed and to reach their potential. We equip them with an understanding of their learning style and a vision for their future, enabling them to become successful self-advocates in the real world.

Our Story

At KGMS, we believe that a safe, nurturing environment is key to academic success. We believe that every child is unique and that their differences should be celebrated. We believe in an innovative approach to education that’s forward-thinking yet rooted in history. We believe that every child deserves to fit in, to feel like they’re on the inside. Above all, we believe in the potential of our students.

We are committed to whole-child development, and our educational approach adapts to the individual needs and learning styles of each student. We empower our students to move past their learning obstacles so they may experience success and a sense of pride in their abilities. At KGMS, you will see dynamic and capable children who are thriving and finding joy in learning.

Who Should Apply?

Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School occupies a unique position among independent schools that specialize in teaching children with learning disabilities, being the first of its kind in Western Canada. With over 40 years of experience, we’ve determined that the following attributes are required of a potential student:

  • Submit a current psycho-educational assessment which indicates a language-based learning disability; or other supporting documentation indicating other learning challenges including, but not limited to, chronic health; visual or hearing impairments; or Autism Spectrum Disorder;
  • Meet the Ministry of Education guidelines for designation of a learning disability;
  • Have average to superior intelligence;
  • Demonstrate that the primary impediments to the student’s learning process are learning differences. Any behavioral, physical or emotional issues must be of secondary concern.

KGMS is a “school of second choice”. If your first choice of school, public or private, has not met the needs of your child we invite you to consider an alternative. If your child meets the above criteria, please contact us today for a tour.
